Title of your presentation : | Lyman alpha galaxies and Galaxy formation |
Abstract |
I will present support for the hypothesis that Lyman-alpha galaxies at high redshifts represent the earliest phases of galaxy formation. By fitting the Spectral energy distributions of these galaxies we conclude that they are dominated by stellar populations that are less than 25 Million years old. The comparison of the luminosity function of Lyman-alpha and Lyman-break galaxies also support a duty cycle of about 10 percent. Clustering properties also show that the duty cycle of the Lyman-alpha phase is about 10 percent. The lack of redshift evolution of Lyman-alpha galaxies between z=3-6.6 is also consistent with this scenario. A simple model of populating dark halos with Lyman-alpha galaxies can explain all their observed properties with reasonable models of star-formation. |
