« Gravitational waves of compact binary systems and post-Newtonian theory »

Tanguy Marchand
Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris (Paris, France)

In this YMCA, I will briefly explain what are gravitational waves, and how compact binary systems, such as two black holes can produce them. We will see how the LIGO/VIRGO detectors are able to detect them and we'll cover 2 (and half) detections made last year. As I will explain, predicted the forms of the expected waves involved requires to used different technique such as pertubation theory and numerical relativity. I will explain the main challenge of post-Newtonian theory (a pertubation theory commonly used) and its importance for detecting and analysing gravitational waves.
