« Detection of intra-cluster light in galaxy clusters » |
Amaël Ellien |
The intra-cluster light (ICL) is the diffuse optical component of galaxy clusters and is believed to be emitted by stars that have been stripped away from their home galaxies through gravitational interactions. While its existence has been known for a while, only fairly recent progresses in low surface brightness (LSB) sciences have been allowing us to probe ICL in a limited amount of galaxy clusters. In this talk I will review the various challenges that need to be answered to systematize the detection and the analysis of this faint and extended source, alongside different formation scenarios of ICL that has been explored in numerical simulations. I will also talk about my approach to detect ICL, which is based on concepts from signal analysis and image processing, and why I developed my Detection Algorithm with Wavelets for Intra-cluster light Surveys (DAWIS). |
