«  A pedagogical introduction to the Hawking effect »

Erwan Allys
Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris (Paris, France)

In this talk, I will try to explain the Melanie's assertion that "Supermassive Black Holes are super Cool ! Oo", and discuss the Hawking effect : the fact that black holes emit a thermal radiation of temperature proportional to their surface gravity. In order to stay the more understanding as possible, we will start from basic considerations of fundamental physics (quantum mechanics, statistical physics, and special and general relativity), and stay at a very simple mathematical level, focusing on the physics underlying this interesting phenomenon.
So, after having discussed the concept of particle and vacuum at the interface of quantum physics and gravitation, using the example of the Unruh effect, we will give an heuristic demonstration of the Hawking radiation, taking different points of view. Finally, we will use these results to quickly discuss in this context the black hole thermodynamic, the cosmological history of a quantum black hole, and the famous information paradox.
