Recent observations with high-resolution spectrographs on ground-based telescopes have reported the detection of the H-a line in the transmission spectrum of a few hot exoplanets. This line traces the absorption between the two lower excited states of the hydrogen atom, H(2) + h? (656 nm) -> H(3), and thus provides insight into the thermodynamic and dynamical properties of the atmospheric gas at the altitudes where the line forms. In this talk, I will go through some of these detections and the corresponding interpretation work.
