« The mystery of the missing accretion disc physics » |
Odele Straub |
Accretion discs. Don't we know how to model them for 40 years now? No, we don't. There is the standard thin disc model, but it breaks down when mass accretion produces luminosities larger than about 10% of the Eddington limit. Luminous accretion requires a modified model called the slim disc that includes advective cooling and thus can deal with large mass accretion rates. Theoretically... On the other hand there are under-luminous accretion structures such as the one in the centre of our galaxy. How to model these? This talk gives an introduction to accretion disc physics from the basic ideas to the current unresolved issues. |
