In this talk I discuss the search effort for continuous gravitational waves (CWs) from two different angles. The first part focuses on fundamental issues of the detection method, and presents some recent work on improving the robustness versus detector artifacts ("lines"). In the second part I will take a more global view on the status of CW searches from spinning neutron stars. The Initial LIGO and Virgo detectors have finished taking data, and are currently being upgraded to the Advanced stage. This is therefore a good opportunity to review our current status, and to confront our future prospects. Two of the main questions [addressed in this talk] are: (i) Can we reasonably expect a CW detection in the Advanced or ET era? (ii) What astrophysical insights can we gain in the absence or presence of a detection?
