« Unveiling the Origin of Neutrinos Observed by IceCube » |
Kohta Murase |
In 2012, the IceCube collaboration reported two PeV neutrino events. A follow-up analysis found 26 more events. Although more statistics is needed to have conclusive evidence, they are likely to include extraterrestrial signals. It is difficult to explain it by cosmogenic neutrinos, so I consider high-energy neutrinos produced inside astrophysical sources. Using the multi-messenger approach, I try to demystify the origin of this "IceCube excess". I argue that it favors the extragalactic origin though Galactic sources can be sub-dominant. There are two main neutrino production mechanisms, pp and pgamma reactions, and it is relevant to discriminate. I show that pp scenarios can be tested in the next several years, while I discuss implications of some specific pgamma scenarios.
