I will review recent achievements in the study of black hole perturbations within the linear approach. I will talk about quasinormal ringing and its possible observation with the help of the gravitational wave detectors, Hawking radiation, testing of the black hole stability, and the interpretation within the AdS/CFT and AdS/CMT correspondence.
