« The problem of galaxy clustering » |
Francesco Sylos Labini |
The main observations of galaxy clustering are presented, and the open problems and their possible explanations discussed. First, I will introduce the statistical properties of the theoretical density fields generally considered in standard cosmology. These are the most possible ordered mass distributions and have sub-Poissonian fluctuations. Moreover, I will discuss the selection of high density regions (biasing) and its relation with the original field, showing why biasing a Gaussian field cannot explain the observed galaxy distribution. Finally, I will illustrate a possible explanation of the observed galaxy correlation based on new statistical methods, pointing out the main open problems for the theoretical understanding of large scale structures. |
