« Hyperbolic formulations of the Einstein equations for numerical simulations » |
C. Gundlach |
In general relativity, the same spacetime metric can be written in many coordinate systems. Just as in electromagnetism, this ""gauge freedom"" has two consequences: one needs to fix the gauge, and the initial data obey constraints. In consequence, there are many different ""formulations"" of general relativity: different PDE systems which describe the same physics. The catch is that many of these are not ""well-posed"" mathematically, which means that they are unsuitable for numerical simulations. I will review these ideas, and some formulations that are commonly used in numerical relativity. |
