« A disequilibrium view of the Milky Way » |
Jorge Penarrubia |
The assumption of dynamical equilibrium is a key tenet in many dynamical modelling techniques. In this talk, I will show that the motion of galaxies in the Local Group (<3 Mpc) favours a scenario where the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) was accreted only recently embedded in an extended dark matter halo that contains as much as 20% of the Milky Way mass. The infall of a massive LMC on a nearly-parabolic orbit is bound to bring our Galaxy out of an equilibrium state and perturb its components in a number of ways, including dislodging the Milky Way disc from the Galactic centre of mass. Here, I will present recent measurements that show that the Milky Way disc is moving with respect to the outer stellar halo in a direction that points at an earlier location on the LMC trajectory. I will finish by showing an (unpublished) analysis that reveals the violent response of the stellar halo to the LMC infall. |
