« Two plus one: binary black hole evolution stimulated by a `dressed' black hole »

Binaries of BHs evolve very slowly when their semi-amjor axis is of the order of few parsecs, thus making their final merging very difficult. I will first synthetically review this "final parsec problem" and then explore the role of a novel mechanism which could accelerate the contraction: the presence of a third BH contributed by a minor merger between the host galaxy of the binary and a smaller galaxy hosting a smaller BH. In particular, if the third BH drags a nuclear star cluster the latter can provide a supplementary source of stars which can periodically fill the "loss cone" of the binary and thus promote a further contraction on timescales of few hundred million years, for realistic cases.
