« Galaxy formation in cosmological zoom simulations » |
Michaela Hirschmann |
I present some of my recent work on the effect of stellar feedback and
metal enrichment on the evolution of galaxies using a sample of 45 high-resolution cosmological zoom simulations. The zoom simulations include an empirical model for momentum-driven galactic winds, which are found to be successful in suppressing early star formation, in increasing cold gas fractions (due to re-accretion of gas), thus, also in reducing the baryon conversion efficiencies for low mass halos in reasonable agreement with observations at various cosmic epochs from z=3 to the present day. In addition, models with galactic winds result in massive galaxies with steep stellar metallicity gradients originating from the hierarchical accretion of low metallicity stars from lower mass satellites. These results provide a possible explanation for the origin and evolution of abundance gradients of massive galaxies in hierarchical cosmological models. |
