« New measurement of anisotropies in the gamma-ray sky and their dark matter interpretation » |

Gamma rays probe the most energetic processes in the universe and are a promising tool to search for signatures of new physics. One outstanding mystery in high-energy astrophysics is the origin of the diffuse gamma-ray background, which is thought to arise from the collective emission of sources too faint to be detected individually. The clustering of sources imprints small-scale anisotropies in the gamma-ray background, which may provide a means of identifying and constraining the properties of its contributors. I will present the results of a new measurement of anisotropies in the diffuse gamma-ray background with the Fermi Large Area Telescope. I will then discuss an interpretation of these results in terms of gamma-ray source population properties, as well as the implications for a possible signal from the annihilation or decay of dark matter particles. |
