"Hyperbolic formulations of the Einstein equations for numerical simulations"

C. Gundlach

In general relativity, the same spacetime metric can be written in many coordinate systems. Just as in electromagnetism, this ""gauge freedom"" has two consequences: one needs to fix the gauge, and the initial data obey constraints. In consequence, there are many different ""formulations"" of general relativity: different PDE systems which describe the same physics. The catch is that many of these are not ""well-posed"" mathematically, which means that they are unsuitable for numerical simulations. I will review these ideas, and some formulations that are commonly used in numerical relativity.
