Current Spitzer data and near-IR images from ground-based and space telescopes are allowing us to investigate the evolution of galaxy stellar mass assembly at high redshifts up to z~7. In this talk I will present the most recent results in this area and discuss some important limitations that still exist in these studies, such as the lack of spectroscopic confirmation particularly for the most massive galaxy candidates at z>3, whose presence potentially challenges the predictions of galaxy formation models; and a poor determination of the low-mass end of the galaxy stellar mass function at the highest redshifts. I will devote the last part of my talk to prospects for JWST, which will allow us to put this important area of galaxy evolution on firm ground and extend galaxy assembly studies to the epoch of reionisation. |
