Over the past decade, deep multi-wavelength surveys have revolutionized our ability to map the internal structure and kinematics of large samples of galaxies over a substantial portion of cosmic history. In addition, theorists have made enormous progress in developing detailed models and simulations of galaxy formation in a cosmological context, which can accurately reproduce many features of the observed evolution. It is now well known that galaxy internal structure (such as size and morphology) is strongly correlated with whether galaxies are "quenched" or not, but the physical origin of these correlations and their full implications are still unclear. I will give an overview of observational studies of the evolution of galaxy structure over cosmic time, with a focus on recent results from the CANDELS survey, and will discuss the physical interpretation of these results in light of current models of galaxy formation. |
