« The Dark Side of Galaxy Formation » |
Alexie Leauthaud |
The connection between the luminous properties of galaxies and the dark matter environment in which they live is one of the keys to unlocking the secrets of galaxy formation. There are a variety of complementary techniques that can be used to probe the galaxy-dark matter connection such as abundance matching, galaxy clustering, redshift-space distortions, and weak gravitational lensing. I will begin this talk by discussing the various merits and disadvantages of each of these methods. Next, I will review recent advances in our understanding of the galaxy-dark matter connection. In particular, I will highlight new results from the COSMOS survey that map the relationship between galaxy stellar-mass, star-formation, and halo-mass. Many of the techniques commonly used to probe the galaxy-dark matter connection are based on Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) models. I will conclude by highlighting some of the limitations of HOD models and will discuss various improvements that must be tackled in view of upcoming surveys such as DES, HSC, LSST, and Euclid. |
