« Tidal interactions of galaxies and their signatures in surveys »

Intrinsic ellipticity correlations of galaxies are recognised as on the of the most important contaminants of future weak lensing surveys. Starting from the interpretation of ellipticity correlations in weak lensing data I will introduce the subject of intrinsic alignments of galaxies and discuss the primary alignment mechanisms in spiral and elliptical galaxies. Reviewing the physical characteristics of tidal interactions of galaxies with the cosmic large-scale structure I will discuss ways of differentiating between the weak gravitational lensing effect and intrinsic alignments on the basis of their physical and statistical properties. Finally I’ll give an outlook how well future weak lensing surveys, in particular Euclid, will be able to constrain tidal interaction mechanisms of galaxies and show how tidal interactions may show up in unexpected places when dealing with large-scale structure data.
