« 6 years of new generation radio astronomy with LOFAR »

The scientific life of LOFAR started on 1st december 2012, after 2 years of commissioning. LOFAR is the first new generation radio telescope, European, of ~2000 km extent, almost entirely digital and whose exploitation is based on the measurement equation formalism. It is an important breakthrough in radioastronomy because it explores deeply for the first time the low-frequency range (30-250 MHz), while having to cope with ionospheric propagation and a harsh interference environment. One of its constitutive « stations » is in Nançay, France. In the past 6 years, the exploitation of LOFAR provided many results in very different fields of astrophysics, from cosmology to planetology to astroparticle physics, but it also helped to build the new European low frequency radio community, and the tools that prepare it for the giant SKA. I will recall the operation of the instrument, and present a brief overview of the results obtained, with an emphasis on the French contribution. I will end with a few perspectives for the future of LOFAR.
