The largest observable structures in the Universe, such as very rich clusters of galaxies or very large voids in the galaxy distribution can be used to test models of large scale structure formation. Their inference can be studied in a rigorous mathematical framework through extreme value statistics theory. I will show how this analytical theory can be applied to derive some quantitative predictions on the largest observable clusters in the Universe or on the cold/hot spots in the cosmic microwave background. I will then discuss some recent results obtained in the literature. Finally, I will try to show where new interesting measurements using extreme value statistics could be performed in current and future observational data. |
