Over the past few years, observations of Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) and Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) have provided tantalising glimpses of a time when the earliest galaxies were just assembling in an infant Universe. Using theoretical calculations that are firmly based in state of the art numerical simulations, I will show how LAEs can be used as excellent probes of reionization, high-redshift galaxy evolution and the dust enrichment of galaxies that formed in the first billion years. I will show results regarding the physical nature and the assembly of these galaxies, and the relation between LAEs and LBGs. I will end by presenting an ingenious way of connecting the high redshift and local Universe, showing that high-redshift LAEs could well be progenitors of galaxies like our own Milky Way. |
