| Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are thought to reside at the core of nearly every galaxy in the Universe, playing an integral role in galaxy formation and evolution. Yet our inability to image their innermost environs poses a challenge to understanding how exactly they grow and shape their surroundings. I will discuss recent advances in multi-wavelength observations, particularly X-ray spectroscopy, which have facilitated unique insights into both the structure and physical processes at work in the cores of galaxies with actively-accreting SMBHs. I will focus especially on the topic of how black hole spin is measured, and the critical part spin plays in the evolution of the SMBH, its host galaxy, and beyond. |
