| SkyMapper is a 1.3m telescope built by the Australian National University as a replacement for the Great Melbourne Telescope lost in the fires that destroyed Mt Stromlo Observatory in 2003. The telescope features an 8 sq-degree FOV, which when coupled with a new 16kx16k array, yields 5.7sq-degree sampled at 0.5" per pixel. SkyMapper will undertake a comprehensive 6-colour, 6-epoch survey of the southern celestial hemisphere - the Southern Sky Survey, as well as a shallow full hemispheric survey to provide photometric and astrometric calibrations to 16mag. Additional time will be used to undertake a limited number of other science programs. In addition to reviewing the telescope and its surveys, I will show first results of the telescope, and discuss how others can work with our team and use the SkyMapper dataset on their own scientific programs. |
