Résumé / Abstract Seminaire_IAP
« Theoretical Predictions for Compact Object Binary Inspirals »

Chris Belczynski

I will review the current merger rates for NS-NS, BH-NS and BH-BH binaries. The rates will be compared with the existing initial LIGO/VIRGO upper limits and discussed in terms of relevant physical processes responsible for the formation of these sources. I will show how soon (in terms of improving upper limits) advanced LIGO/VIRGO will start providing very useful astrophysical constraints that are at the moment beyond the reach of electromagnetic observations. Finally, I will discuss how advanced LIGO/VIRGO detections may resolve several issues associated with the formation of stellar-origin black holes.
