Insights from string theory and black hole physics indicate that at a fundamental level space-time emerges from an underlying dynamical system. Starting from first principles we show that Newtonian gravity naturally arises as an adiabatic reaction force caused by the fact that the phase space volume of the underlying system is influenced by the positions of material bodies. A relativistic generalization of the presented arguments naturally leads to the Einstein equations. Near horizons the emergent description of space-time and matter start to break down, and the gravitational force degenerates into an entropic force. We find that the energy of the dynamical system that is underlying our universe can be identified with observed dark energy. Our approach suggests a novel explanation of observed dark matter effects in galaxies and clusters. |
