Recent detections of merging binary compact objects by the gravitational-wave observatories LIGO and Virgo revolutionized our understanding of the formation and evolution of these systems, leaving us with many open questions. While these discoveries allow for the first time to directly study populations of binaries that merge in the local Universe, the properties of black holes and neutron stars in different environments, in particular at higher redshifts, remain unconstrained. In this talk I will discuss indirect ways to study stellar-mass black hole and neutron star populations across cosmic times, focusing on the yet to be detected stochastic gravitational-wave background and the abundance of heavy elements produced in binary neutron star mergers. I will also discuss the prospects of detecting stellar-mass and super-massive black hole binaries with the space-based observatory LISA. |
