| RAVE, SDSS, Segue, Pan-STARRS, Gaia and other huge surveys provide unprecedented constraints on the detailed structure, dynamics and evolution of the Milky Way. Most of these surveys are restricted to optical bands only, meaning that interpretation of their results is plagued by uncertainties in interstellar extinction. I discuss methods that can be used to build up a coherent, three-dimensional map of dust within the Galaxy and what the application of such methods tells us about Galactic structure. |
