Since its launch in May 2009, the Herschel Space Observatory has been exploring the spectral window between 60 and 650 microns with its far-IR-to-submm cameras and spectrometers. The first round of results covers phenomena from the Solar System to very high redshifts, including: surprising behavior of dust emissivity in the submm; remarkably clear morphological signatures of star-forming material in early collapse; tantalizing hints of a significant population of lensed galaxies; insights into the ISM from fine-structure line data; and densely populated high-resolution spectra revealing richly detailed chemical processes and excitation conditions |
