« The climate crisis, a unique opportunity to rethink the future ? » |
Eric Guilyardi |
Our climate is changing due to human activities. What are the consequences of this major change on the biosphere and on our societies ? What risk are we taking, depending on the choices we will make ? We will first address these questions by understanding how the planet’s climate works, the respective roles of the ocean and the atmosphere, what causes climate variations, the carbon cycle and other cogs of the climate machine. In a second part, we will discuss the role of science in society and in particular that of a climate scientist. We will see how the global awareness of these environmental issues drives a collective ownership of the multiple dimensions of the associated challenges.
Reflecting on the respective roles of science in the making, scientific expertise, public governance, civic engagement and education means finding a way to redefine together what matters. And what if, rather than another problem to be solved, the crisis we are experiencing was a wonderful opportunity to rethink our collective project? |
