« The Hubble tension, a local void and cepheid systematics » |
Edvard Mörtsell |
There is a tension between the value of the Hubble constant as inferred from Type Ia supernova distances and the distance to the cosmic microwave background decoupling surface. A potential solution to the Hubble tension is the hypothesis that the Milky Way is located near the centre of a matter underdensity. More mundane explanations involve uncertainties in the local distance ladder used to estimate the distances to Type Ia supernovae. I will argue that a local void can only have a minor impact on the locally measured Hubble constant but that systematic uncertainties in the Cepheid distance calibration may be underestimated and could invalidate current claims of a substantial tension with the value derived from Planck data.
