« Black holes spin »

The properties of astrophysical black holes are determined by their mass and spin only. Both these parameters are directly related to the birth and evolution of these purely gravitational celestial bodies. As shown by Penrose in 1969, the black-hole's rotational energy can be tapped (in principle), providing a source of power comparable with that of accretion. In 1977 Blandford and Znajek proposed that relativistic jets produced in the vicinity of black holes result from electromagnetic extraction of black hole rotational energy. I will present the latest results of observational determination of black-hole spins and of the relation and correlation between spin and jet power. Then I will discuss the theoretical aspects of the spin-jet connection based on the latest numerical simulations and recent understanding of the Blandford-Znajek mechanism as a Penrose process.
