In recent years, major changes were successfully done at the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer and the 30-meter telescope, in particular in the areas of receivers and back-ends. These enhancements increased in significant ways the sensitivity and the efficiency of both IRAM facilities, enabling important advances in the study of sources in the early universe. I will first present results obtained at IRAM on high-redshift (1< z <7.3) sub-millimeter galaxies and quasars, that will illustrate the recent progress that has been made.
In parallel, first results on high-z sources, using the Atacama Large sub-Millimeter Array (ALMA), are now becoming available. I will discuss these recent ALMA results, which illustrate the remarkable power of this new facility. I will conclude by sketching the future of the field in the next coming years when the ALMA array will become fully operational and when the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA), a project that will further enhance the IRAM interferometer, will be built. |
