« The Einstein rings of power »

Einstein rings are amongst the most spectacular images of astronomy. They are produced by the phenomenon of gravitational lensing, when a massive galaxy (the lens) lies between us and another, more distant, galaxy (the source). Einstein rings are usually modeled as if the main lens were alone in an otherwise homogeneous Universe. But the Universe is not homogeneous, so that other structures along the line of sight generally perturb the morphology of the ring. I will explain how this works, and how we may harness the power of Einstein rings to do cosmology, especially in the era of Euclid.
