| The European Space Agency has formally approved in spring 2006 the overall funding of its next space astrometry mission Gaia scheduled for a launch in 2011. The mission will create an extraordinarily precise three-dimensional map of about one billion stars throughout our Galaxy and beyond from repeated astrometric and photometric observations over about five years. In early 2007 ESA has entrusted a European Consortium of scientists and engineers with the challenging task of designing, implementing and carrying out the processing of the Gaia raw data. In my presentation I will outline the wide range of scientific objectives of the mission and the overall principles of the instruments and of the measurement procedures in astrometry and photometry. I will describe with more details the structure of the data processing and the organization that has been put in place with the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (the DPAC) to take up this challenge. |
