I will present a summary of some of our recent observational campaigns
to investigate the conditions in some of the first galaxies, as well as their impact upon the ionization state of the intergalactic medium. Specifically, I plan to address the average spectra of z>6 galaxies observed with JWST, and what we have learned about their ionizing photon production and nebular abundance patterns. I will address briefly the surprisingly large numbers of active galactic nuclei that have recently been identified at early times, and what this may mean for the formation of supermassive black holes. I will finally present some recently-made measurements of the sizes of ionized bubbles at z=6.5-11 based upon the Lyman alpha emission line. |
