Numerical simulations play an ever larger role in exploring the interaction of complex astrophysical processes and interpreting astronomical data. At the same time, the Virtual Observatory movement is attempting to change the way in which astronomers archive, communicate and access data. I will discuss the Millennium Simulation and our experience making it available to the wider astronomical public. This is the largest simulation of cosmic structure formation so far carried out. It provides detailed information on the evolution of the dark matter distribution and the galaxy populations in a variety of models based on the concordance cosmology. In the 18 months since first data release about 50 journal papers have been submitted using simulation data, about half of them by groups with no direct association to the project.
