First, I review recent theoretical developments on novae, including the universal decline law of nova light curves. The comparison of theoretical light curves with multiwavelength observations is a useful tool to determine white dwarf (WD) masses. The WD masses are thought to decrease after nova outbursts in classical novae, but they are increasing in recurrent novae. I show this and also that these WD masses are close to the Chandrasekhar limit, from our light curve analysis of a binary system, which consists of a WD with an irradiated disk and a lobe-filling companion.
Also in some supersoft X-ray sources, I introduce our self-sustained intermittent mass ejection model and show that their WD masses are increasing in time. These objects contain very massive WDs which are growing in mass. Therefore, they are candidates of type Ia supernova progenitors. Last, I briefly introduce binary evolution scenarios to type Ia supernovae and formation of circumstellar matter (CSM) around the progenitors, explaining recent detections of various CSM around SNe Ia. |
