For the last 30 years, the internal kinematics of local galaxies has not only been important for understanding their dynamics, but also galaxy evolution and the properties of dark matter. Recently, it has become possible to measure the internal kinematics of large samples of galaxies at high redshift (z~1) due to the advent of multi-object spectrographs on 8-meter class telescopes. In this talk, data from the DEIMOS spectrograph on Keck, which were taken as part of the DEEP2 Redshift Survey, will be presented. The focus will be on the relation between galaxy stellar mass and rotation velocity (the stellar mass Tully-Fisher relation). Studying this relation over the last half of the age of the Universe has given us new insights into how galaxies evolve and how their dynamics is related to their morphology. A new velocity indicator that traces the potential wells of galaxy-dark halo systems will be introduced. It implies a remarkable regularity to the dynamics of galaxies that has yet to be fully understood. |
