« Orbital resonances between pairs of exoplanets, volcanoes on Io, cracks on Europa and geysers on Enceladus » |
Peter Goldreich |
We present a new model for orbital resonance that links these seemingly disparate systems. It explains the surprisingly small number of near commensurate orbits in multi-planet systems. Moreover, it accounts for the deficit of planet pairs at exact resonance and for the corresponding excess of pairs with slightly greater separation. Potential applications to the episodic heating of Io, Europa and Enceladus will also be discussed. |
