The stellar initial mass function (IMF) has been constrained to a reasonable degree of accuracy for Galactic-field populations and for on-going star-forming regions. I will discuss the methods of extracting the actual stellar IMF from observations, and will emphasise stellar-dynamical biases. While a conservative interpretation of the data suggest the IMF to be invariant, some indications do appear to exist to the extend that more metal-rich environments may be fragmenting into less-massive stars on average. Furthermore, assuming the IMF to be invariant implies that galactic-field populations have steeper field IMFs for massive stars which vary with the star-formation history of the galaxy. Recent surveys of star-forming regions indicate that about one brown dwarf is born per 4-5 stars. |
