| Galaxies come in all shapes and sizes, yet we know little about the processes that lead to this diversity. For example, although elliptical galaxies lie preferentially in clusters, we do not understand whether this trend results from conditions at the time of their formation or from their subsequent evolution in such special environments. What is the evidence that environment subsequently affects the evolution of galaxies? Which galaxy environments and evolutionary mechanisms are the most influential? How might we expand our knowledge to higher redshifts? I will discuss results from our recent surveys of rich clusters, poor groups, and the field at z~0 that shed some light on these issues and that raise others. |
