« Does Spacetime do the Twist? The launch and implications of Gravity Probe-B » |
Clifford M. Will |
Gravity Probe B is a space experiment to measure the precession of an array of orbiting gyroscopes caused by the dragging of inertial frames by the rotating earth (Lense-Thirring effect). It will also measure the geodetic precession caused by space curvature around the earth. It is scheduled for launch on April 17, 2004, weather permitting. In this talk we will review the scientific implications of the measurement, describe the experiment, and discuss some of the history of the project. With luck we may also be able to describe the early performance of the instruments in orbit. |
