« The Andromeda galaxy: a test of our concepts of galaxy formation » |
Rodrigo Ibata |
I will present several large surveys of the halo and disk components of the Andromeda galaxy. These new photometric and kinematic data are giving us a uniquely detailed view of the structure and dynamics of this system, which is the closest giant disk galaxy to the Milky Way, and show many interesting small scale sub-structures and large scale trends that have gone undetected hitherto. I will discuss the consequences of these findings for our understanding of the formation of thick disks and stellar halos. |
