| The Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA) is the largest ground based astronomical observatory. ALMA is an international collaboration between Europe, North America, East Asia and the host country Chile, to build a unique facility to explore the Universe at submillimetre wavelengths. ALMA is in the final stages of construction and has already started scientific operations in Early Science mode. The science goals of ALMA are focused on understanding the origins of galaxies, the origins of stars and planetary systems, and the origins of complex and pre-biotic molecules in the interstellar space. In this talk I will review the challenges in building this revolutionary facility, the current status of construction and the operational concepts, I will also discuss the unique scientific contributions that will be made possible with ALMA and a summary of the initial results from Science Verification with an outlook on the prospects for Early and Full science operations. |
