Following the discovery of a relationship between mass of a central black hole and the mass of its host bulge (Magorrian et al. 1998) and the subsequent interpretation by Silk and Rees (1998), outflows from black holes have been considered important in shaping the galaxy luminosity function.
Our group has been investigating the interaction between relativistic jets and both inhomogeneous and homogeneous interstellar media with a view to determining the physics of feedback at both high and low redshift. In this talk, I shall present our most recent simulations of relativistic jet “quenching mode” feedback involving realistic inhomogeneous interstellar media on a scale of approximately 5 kpc and the prediction of optical, X-ray and radio features of the interacting jet and ISM. I shall also discuss work on “maintenance mode” feedback via a detailed study of the X-ray cluster radio source Hydra A by PhD student Mohammad Nawaz. Jet precession on a time scale of a Myr appears to be important both in understanding the morphology of the radio source and its role in reversing the cooling flow in the cluster. |
