Novae are thermonuclear explosions on top of accreting white dwarfs in close binary systems. They eject matter containing isotopes overabundant with respect to the solar composition and thus contribute to the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. One of these isotopes is lithium-7, which has been predicted to be overproduced by novae since decades, but it was never detected until very recently, in 2015. I will discuss the relevance of this discovery for the understanding of the origin of cosmic lithium. Another recent highlight regarding nova explosions is their detection by the LAT instrument, onboard the Fermi satellite, at energies larger then 100 MeV, meaning that novae are sites of cosmic rays acceleration. I will describe details and implications of this discovery. |
