Supernovae are the main source of heavy elements in the Universe, enriching the galactic and intergalactic medium. They deliver large amounts of kinetic energy, produce shocks that heat the ejected supernova material and the ambient medium to tens of millions degrees.
These media, strong X-ray emitters, are observable in young supernova remnants. They provide prime information on the physics of the supernova and on the progenitor. Strong shocks in supernova remnants accelerate particles to TeV energies, contributing to galactic cosmic rays. I will review our current understanding of supernova remnants and open questions in the field. I will present the Athena X-ray observatory, the mission and its scientific objectives before to conclude on the Athena expectation for supernova remnants. |
