« Where exoplanets meet cosmology: probabilistic modeling of astrophysics data » |
David Hogg |
The future of both fields - cosmology and exoplanets - relies on finding increasingly subtle signals in increasingly large data sets. I show that the most effective methods for performing these investigations involve probabilistic generative models, which include a likelihood or probability of the raw (or fairly raw) data, and priors over what turn out to be abundant (exceedingly abundant) nuisance parameters. The methods are all computationally expensive, but I show off some successes in large-scale structure experiments, quasar astrophysics, Milky Way dynamics, high dynamic-range imaging, and transit discovery. |
